Just wanted to drop a quick "hi" from up north.  This is Mike Walker-used to work with A. at your workshop.  I wanted to let you know that I am so glad to have the ShoeboxTasks in my classroom up here.  I have two severely challanged guys who excel with the tasks and even the more mildly challenged guys request them as special activities.  I ordered all of the second set and the two other classrooms each ordered basic curriculums.  I appreciate all of the help and information I amassed working with you and I am no able to use it daily in my autism support classroom here in Philly.  Hope all is well.  Congrats on the new tasks.....they look awesome.  Mike Walker

It can be shared with siblings, grandparents, cousins, and other family members, as well as teachers and therapists. In addition to the workbook for kids, it is full of structured teaching ideas for teachers and parents. It is a thorough introduction to autism for a new teacher, and provides many practical ideas for new and veteran teachers of autistic students.

Pat Rakovic, a speech therapist from the Rhode Island Autism Project wrote that "The explanation of structured teaching is super and aids in instructing others that might not be as well versed in TEACCH to the whys and hows of structured teaching. Examples are given in the book that aid both the novice as well as the more experienced.  The book is set up with worksheets for the student followed by information for parents and teachers. There are drawings and quotes by children with HFA or Aspergers. I loved the idea Catherine Faherty had of having the student circle the page numbers that are important to the child. This will give us even greater understanding of the student. The author's insight into the subject matter and the respect and honor she has for the illustrators and people she quoted in the book further enhance its readability. I would very much recommend the purchase of this book!"

TEACCH Instructional Video

teacchinstructional.jpgFilmed at the Western Regional Autism Preschool Program, this new 16-minute film highlights the three important aspects of the TEACCH approach; elements and structure of the physical environment, independent work systems, and daily schedules.

The Preschool Program is a collaborative effort between the TEACCH program, a statewide agency that has been serving the autistic population for the past 25 years, and the Autism Society of North Carolina.

The class, located in Asheville, NC, serves 5 students with autism and is staffed by a teacher and teacher assistant.  The curriculum is highly individualized for each student based on thorough evaluations conducted prior to enrollment. Each day is comprised of a variety of activities which include: small group work, fine and gross motor activities, independent work, individual instruction, and the possibility of large group activities with non-autistic peers.  Communication and social skills are built into all activities.
