For over 30 years I have been involved with the autism community, wearing many different hats along the way. My introduction to this community began as a therapist with the North Carolina TEACCH program here in Asheville, NC. It was there that I gained my initial experience and some understanding of autism through association with therapists, teachers, families and the individuals themselves. I worked with all ages, covering a wide range of the autism spectrum. I found that each individual manifested unique aspects of this behavioral diagnosis, requiring creative strategies for developing a life’s plan to meet whatever challenges they were facing and were likely to face in the future. Working closely with the families led to individualized plans, covering all aspects of life and I have been a privileged witness as to how this has played out over the years. As a so called neurotypical, I would like to share some of the things I have learned, and what I most appreciate about the autism community. You can’t force “normal looking” behaviors upon the autistic child. For example, the ability to make eye contact. This will happen when the individual is ready, and relaxed and trusting enough in a given situation. And when that happens naturally, it is a rewarding experience for everyone because it is genuine rather than being a masked or forced response. The differences between people can be their strongest connection and, when nurtured, can often lead to greater understanding of what it is to be human. Being around someone who presents differently than we are accustomed to, may make one uncomfortable but it is an opportunity to stay present with that discomfort and not flee from it. Who knows what could open up? For over thirty years Centering on Children has employed adults on the spectrum. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. I can’t begin to express my gratitude for all that they have contributed over the years. Besides the actual work accomplished, the qualities these individuals bring to work are admirable. Since much of our work is repetitive in nature, you might expect the average neurotypical to be bored and have his/her mind wander and be prone to making mistakes. Not so with these folks on the autism spectrum! With the appropriate structure in place, they exhibit extraordinary focus, seldom making mistakes. With a consistently upbeat spirit and a zen-like ability to be in the moment, they are able to address directly whatever is before them. it is inspiring to be around such energy!
